Learn more about Port Charlotte, FL, and Charlotte Harbor
Port Charlotte is situated at the midpoint between Sarasota and Fort Myers. With a population of approximately 62,000 people, the City has an average size for the Sunshine State. What sets this location apart is its proximity to Charlotte Harbor, a vast body of water. Port Charlotte boasts over 150 miles of both natural and human-made waterways, with many canals offering direct access to Charlotte Harbor, the Peace and Myakka Rivers, and ultimately, the Gulf of Mexico.
Boaters, who are not so experienced, love Charlotte Harbor because it is easy to navigate and relatively safe when the weather changes. Being 70 miles out on the Gulf while a storm approaches can be a different story.
A Community with Diverse Neighborhoods
Port Charlotte has the character of a large, planned community. Besides an area along the US-41, the town is quiet and basically residential, with a substantial percentage of retirees and snowbirds. Compared to Englewood, Venice, or Sarasota, one can say that this town is not particularly touristy. When tourists spend their hard-earned money, they want to be in heaven, and heaven is usually directly on the beach or where you can at least smell the ocean. Port Charlotte is about a 20-minute drive from the Gulf of Mexico beaches. For residents who live there all year round, that doesn’t make a difference. Port Charlotte is one of the best places to retire, with a laid-back lifestyle, easy water access, and many golf courses.
