Local Area Information and Real Estate for Sale
The 12 sun-drenched miles of beach are a popular destination for visitors from all around the world. Longboat Key is only accessible by two toll-free drawbridges; there is no other direct connection to the mainland. No ferry, no airport.
The Island is easily accessible
Coming from the south, the visitor has to take the Ringling Causeway Bridge to Lido Key/St Armands Key. After that, he crosses the bridge to the Key. Coming from the north, he has to cross the bridge from the mainland to Anna Maria Island first. He needs to follow the main road on Anna Maria southwards. After a few miles of a beautiful scenic drive, he will cross the second bridge to Longboat Key.
As complicated as it sounds to get there, Sarasota is only a 20-minute drive away – you are not out in the boonies when you are on Longboat Key! Not at all!
Condominiums and Single Family Homes
Almost the entire land area of Longboat Key is now occupied by either single-family homes or condominium apartments. Most of the condominium associations co-own amenities like pools, tennis courts or beach access. But people who do not like condominiums so much have another choice: Single-family Homes. There is a mixture of older and smaller houses on relatively small parcels, while the big new multi-million-dollar homes are on spacious 1/2 acre lots.
This diverse mix of homes lines the many cul-de-sac and boulevards branching off main roads towards both the bay and the gulf. Many of those homes are sitting on a canal with boat docks and direct access to the Sarasota Bay.
The main road called “Gulf of Mexico Drive” follows the center of the island and is connecting Longboat Key with Anna Maria Island to the north and Lido Key to the south. It is a beautiful road lined with mature palm trees. It is the only road that goes all the way from north to south.
The Town of Longboat Key
Longboat Key, or “The Town of Longboat Key” (yes, Longboat Key is legally a town), is very different compared to Anna Maria Island: big condominium/apartment buildings and manicured parks and gardens set the tone. There are grand mansions and even grander yachts on Longboat Key. Famous five-star restaurants and luxury homes dot the 12-mile shoreline of this barrier island.
Longboat Key is different
The theme is also different: everything is more upscale, more luxurious. The world class golf course on Longboat Key is not considered a luxury but rather a given. All this may be the reasons why the Key is more or less a quieter destination. If you decided to live here, you would want to stay away from crowds of tourists and spring break craziness. You don’t like it that quiet and want a little “craziness” once in a while? Well, the other choice would be to enjoy the tranquility of Longboat Key and drive a few miles north or south and mingle with the crowd on Anna Maria or Lido Key for that purpose.
