You will find Beach Homes only on the barrier islands because no part of the mainland is facing the Gulf of Mexico directly. There is always the Intracoastal Waterway or a bay between the mainland and the islands.
An unobstructed view of the Gulf of Mexico is priceless, of course. However, overlooking Lemon Bay from your living room window is not too bad, either. It all depends on how much money you want to spend and if you really want to live that particular island style living.
But if you are looking for a true Beach Home in the Englewood area, the primary location for those homes would be the barrier island of Manasota Key. At the very southern end of the island is Stump Pass Beach State Park. Next to the park is a small resort. A little further north are small beach cottages and older single family homes. Here and there is a new home.
Before you hit the roundabout you will see newer Condos on the beach. The next mile there is the only commercial activity on Manasota Key.
Small restaurants, pubs, bars and little stores, and boat rental places provide "basic" service to the beach goers. The Beach is called "Englewood Beach" and offers nice amenities.
Another mile of condos an single family homes/cottages is following, but suddenly there are no condos and cottages anymore.
From now on the island architecture is dominated by impressive single family homes. Some are brand new, most of the homes are a little older. Many of them are hidden behind lush tropical vegetation and the passerby has no chance to figure out what they look like.
There is almost no "commercial activity" in the mid and north section of the Manasota Key. There are very few motel like rental places, but that is it.
Middle beach is right in the center of Manasota Key; at the north end is Manasota Beach. The "Fish House" and a Tiki Bar are the only commercial activities on this end of the barrier island.
The "Real" Tropical Retreat
You want to live like Robinson but without Friday? Yes, you can do that. Beach Homes located on Don Pedro-, Palm-, Knight and Little Gasparilla Island, can only be reached by ferry or private boat. There are no cars, just golf carts, and the islands are untouched by time and commercial activity. If you love the seclusion and if you love unspoiled nature you will find your perfect beach retreat here. If you run into a guy with a long beard on those islands, you may have just encountered Mr. Robinson Crusoe. Yes, you are that far away from civilization.
Help! I don't see what I am looking for.
